Ferguson takes charge of the Wasps

We’re delighted to confirm Barry Ferguson MBE has been appointed as first team manager.

After almost three years at Kelty Hearts, with Lowland League titles and promotion to the SPFL secured with the Fife side, Barry makes the step up to lead our League 1 campaign.

The former midfielder had an illustrious playing career picking up 15 trophies with Rangers and also winning the English League Cup with Birmingham City.

It’s a club that you look over the years, the managers that have been here… they’ve always been good managers who’ve progressed in the game so once I met the chairman and saw the facilities, it’s the right club at the right time. My sole aim in the next year is to try and get straight back into the Championship. I’ve spoken to one or two [players]. I’ll get round all the boys in the next couple days. There’s a good core of players already signed up. If I can go add a good bit of quality to go and help those players… the players already signed up are players I rate very highly… Hopefully in the next week or two we’ll see players coming in.

Barry Ferguson

Barry’s experience in football you won’t better. His recent track record is as strong as his career… Critically, what attracted us is his enthusiasm and ambition. We’re an ambitious club. When you see someone and talk to someone who reflects the qualities of our club then you take that opportunity if it’s available. I think the Championship and League 1 are two difficult leagues, but financially, not only will we not be cutting our budget from last season, we’ll probably increase it… to ensure we can compete.

End of Season Award Results

Player of the Year

Alloa Athletic’s record breaking appearance holder bags the top honour with over 45% of the total votes. Kevin Cawley‘s 33 appearances this season saw him create the most goals of any player over the COVID-19 disrupted year. 5 strikes found the net while another 5 were set up by the Wasps’ talisman.

Kevin Cawley (blue) dominates the POTY voting.

Goal of the Season

Alan Trouten’s (blue) half way line effort paled in comparison to the Williamson’s rocket (yellow).

In another landslide contest, 18-year-old Lucas Williamson tied up the Goal of the Season award with his wonder strike into the top corner to give Alloa the lead against Ayr United. The strike somehow was beaten to the SPFL’s own goal of the month competition in March much to the dismay of anyone with eyes.

Young Player of the Year

In the only real battle for an award this year, just a 20 vote difference swung the competition in favour of Kilmarnock loanee Innes Cameron ahead of Williamson. The commanding striker looked more than his age of just 20 years as he battered the opposition and the back of the net 6 times in his 15 Alloa appearances looking like a seasoned professional on the way.

The two-horse race of Cameron (red) and Williamson (blue) swung wildly over the week of voting.

The End of Season Awards

Several players reached Alloa landmarks this season. Each received a commemorative plate from the club to mark the milestone. Kevin Cawley received a portrait after becoming the record appearance holder.

Scott Taggart and Steven Hetherington broke a double century, Neil Parry with 150, and Liam Buchanan made a ton of Alloa appearances.

We’re thankful for their long service in Alloa colours.

Peter Grant to depart

The club can confirm today that Peter Grant will leave the club at the end of his current contract this summer.  We take this opportunity to put on record our thanks for his fantastic work over the last 24 months and wish him every success in the future.

Mike Mulraney said “The commitment and professionalism that Peter has brought to Alloa has been a credit to him, we could not have asked for more.  Obviously results this season have been disappointing, however it is with sadness we see Peter leave the club.  I do however respect his decision and wish him the very best in all his future endeavours”.

The directors, staff and all who are involved at the club have enjoyed working with Peter and wish him well in the future.
