The Opposition Report: Celtic B

Celticโ€™s B team returned to the Scottish mainstream in 2021/22 through entry into the Lowland League, giving the clubโ€™s brightest talents exposure to competitive menโ€™s football. That process has since expanded, with cooperation loans and testing fixtures against senior opposition in the KDM Evolution Trophy โ€” designed to push young players closer to the standards required at the top level.

The early signs this season have been promising. Celtic opened their campaign with two wins from two: a 3-1 victory over Clyde, where Callum Osmand, Sean McArdle, and Samuel Isiguzo found the net after an early red card for Tommy Robson, followed by a hard-fought 1-0 win against Kelty Hearts sealed by Finlay Hale, with Aidan Rice keeping a clean sheet against League One opposition.

The Hot Prospects

Callum Osmand
Celtic secured the highly rated Welsh striker on a four-year deal in the summer. The 19-year-old joined from Fulham, where he came through the academy from the age of 12. A prolific 2024/25 campaign with the U21s โ€” 18 goals and a Premier League 2 Player of the Season nomination โ€” highlighted his pedigree.

Osmand brings explosive pace and clever movement, with his ability to shift gears unsettling defenders. Against Clyde, he forced the sending-off and later opened the scoring with a sharp run in behind, underlining both his power and poise in front of goal.

Sean McArdle
Eighteen-year-old Scot McArdle signed his first professional deal in 2023 and has quickly risen through the ranks. The left-footed midfielder featured 25 times in last seasonโ€™s Lowland League, scoring five goals, while also playing in six UEFA Youth League matches.

A product of futsal, McArdle excels in tight spaces and shows composure beyond his years. He has already dipped his toe into senior football, providing an assist for Luis Palma in a friendly against Sligo Rovers before making his competitive debut against Hibernian.

Francis Turley
Since joining in 2022, Belfast-born Turley has emerged as one of Celticโ€™s most exciting young playmakers. Left-footed, technically sharp, and composed, he has been central to the B team, making 35 appearances and contributing two goals. On the European stage, he has impressed with three goals and an assist in seven UEFA Youth League outings.

Turleyโ€™s progress was rewarded with a first-team debut against St Mirren in August 2024. Reflecting on the challenge ahead, he admitted: โ€œThe challenge is breaking into the first team, itโ€™s not easy with a winning team that is performing but you have to keep working hard and be patient. Having belief in your own ability is important.โ€

The First-Team Question

For all the talent emerging at Lennoxtown, Celticโ€™s challenge remains turning youth promise into senior impact. In recent years, Rocco Vata and Daniel Kelly have headed south to the English Championship with Watford and Millwall, while prolific B team forward Daniel Cummings joined West Ham this summer. It is now nearly a decade since Kieran Tierney forced his way from the academy into the first team and became a mainstay.

The question lingers: can Osmand, McArdle, Turley, or others from this generation bridge the gap to the first team squad? Alloa have not had the best of starts in the competition – and the pressure to advance will make this the most competitive tie the young Celtic squad have faced yet. For the Wasps it’s a tricky and dangerous opponent.

The Opposition Report: Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Inverness are riding a wave of optimism. After exiting administration at the tail end of last season and comfortably retaining their place in the League, the Highland side are now dreaming of a return to the Championship.

Theyโ€™ve racked up eight goals in their opening four games, conceding just twice โ€“ both against Stenhousemuir. If not for their points deduction, weโ€™d be previewing a visit to top-of-the-table Inverness.

Strong Start to the Season

Scott Kellacherโ€™s side have begun the campaign in fine form, with goals spread throughout the team.

  • Montrose, Peterhead, and Kelty all failed to score against Inverness, who swept them aside.
  • The only blemish came against Stenhousemuir, a 2โ€“1 defeat. However, the result did not reflect the performance: Inverness had 19 attempts on goal, scoring once, while Stenhousemuir converted 2 goals from just 4 shots.

The basis of their success is their confident, possession-based football. On the ball, Inverness pass fluidly with constant movement and runners off the ball, making them difficult to contain. Add flashes of quality from their summer recruits, and itโ€™s clear why they look like genuine title contenders.

New Signings

Key Additions

  • Alfie Bavidge โ€“ The Scotland U19 international striker returns to Inverness. A rising star, he has been deployed on the left to cut inside, allowing Billy McKay or Chanka Zimba to lead the line. Keeping him quiet will be crucial for an Alloa success.
  • David Wotherspoon โ€“ With two Scottish Cups and a League Cup to his name, โ€œSpoonyโ€ brings pedigree and creativity. At 35, he still has the ability to torment defences with his guile and experience.

Other Summer Signings

  • Ross Millen
  • Joe Chalmers
  • Ross Munro
  • Logan Ross
  • Chanka Zimba
  • Alfie Stewart
  • Liam Sole
  • Mitchell Robertson

Last Meeting

It was an end-to-end contest that either side could have edged. Alfie Stewart fired Inverness in front early on, before Alloa levelled after the break through Scott Taggartโ€™s glancing header into the far corner. Both teams struck the woodwork, while Billy McKay was denied from the penalty spot by Morrisonโ€™s outstanding double save. The drama continued late on as Inverness were reduced to ten men when Remi Savage was shown red โ€” a match that truly had a bit of everything.

Charlie Dewar signs on loan

Alloa Athletic are delighted to confirm the loan signing of highly rated young centre-back Charlie Dewar from Dundee United.

He’s looking to pick up where he left off in his loan spell where he impressed in the 14 appearances he made last season after signing in late January.

We’re delighted to have him back for this season.

Gallagher signs

Alloa Athletic Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of experienced striker Calum Gallagher, who joins the Wasps following his departure from Arbroath FC.

Gallagher, 30, is no stranger to Recreation Park. A product of the Rangers youth system, his first loan spell in senior football came with Alloa in January 2013. Since then, he has carved out a successful career across the Scottish leagues, most notably with Airdrieonians, where he enjoyed five prolific seasons between 2019 and 2024. During that time, he scored 59 goals in 149 appearances and was named PFA Scotland League One Playersโ€™ Player of the Year in 2022โ€“23.

In April 2024, Gallagher signed for Arbroath and found the net twice against Alloa last season, both times delivering the winning goals at Recreation Park. This time, however, the Wasps will be hoping to see that streak at home continue!

Welcome back to the Wasps, Calum!

Calum Adamson joins from Rangers

Alloa Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Calum Adamson on a cooperation loan.

Adamson has impressed featuring for Rangers U18’s and B sides last season and has earned his place in the Scotland U19’s squad.

Everyone at the club extends a warm welcome to Calum, and we look forward to seeing him continue his development in senior football at Alloa Athletic.

The Opposition Report: Hamilton Accies

Needless to say, Hamilton Academicalโ€™s start to the season has been fractious. After being relegated due to administrative breaches โ€” accompanied by a transfer ban โ€” and relocated following a dispute with the stadium owners at New Douglas Park, fans have openly protested outside their new temporary home in Cumbernauld. It puts into perspective the admirable work that manager John Rankin is doing on the pitch to keep his side resilient amid the off-field distractions and top of the William Hill League 1 table.

The league opening

To open the season, Hamilton handily dispatched a tricky Montrose side. Oli Shaw and Charlie Telfer, who appeared as a trialist, bagged the goals as Accies began their nomadic season away from home in comfortable fashion.

The second game, against Queen of the South, saw Hamilton blow away the Dumfries side and collect a few goals for the highlight reels. Connor Smith opened the scoring with a thunderous strike from 25 yards inside the half-hour mark, and Charlie Telfer rattled in a sensational half-volley into the top corner. Reece Lyon nodded one in for Queen of the South just after half-time following a slick move, but they were swiftly brought back down to earth by Connor Smithโ€™s second โ€” an inspired curling effort from 20 yards. Steven Bradley bagged the fourth to cap a dominant display against one of the title hopefuls.

First wobbles?

However, itโ€™s not all rosy in the garden. Last week, Hamilton faced a very different test in the shape of Dick Campbellโ€™s East Fife. Alloa have already had a taste of the effective, physical football that the Methil side brings, and the challenge proved too much. At Cumbernauld, the visitors grabbed all three points. While Scott Robinson opened the scoring and Hamilton went in at the break ahead, an inspired second-half substitution in Rob Jones changed the game. The big striker scored twice in just eight minutes on the park as Hamilton fell completely out of the game.

Hamilton remain on top of the pile and on paper, Hamilton might expect to keep up the form they showed last time in League 1, when they kept pace with back-to-back title winners Falkirk early in the season. But it perhaps highlights a lack of depth to change the game if the starting eleven begin to fatigue which will certainly be a interesting element to keep an eye on as the season continues.

New signings with a twist

Despite the transfer ban, Hamilton have added to their team โ€” albeit through amateur contracts.

  • Cale Loughrey, a 24-year-old Canadian centre-back, arrives after a spell in the Romanian second tier.
  • 21 year-old midfielder Michael Stone also joined on amateur terms after leaving Huddersfield Town last season.
  • Idris Munir, a Nigerian U23 international, joined from Drumchapel United, where he was their Young Player of the Season.

Itโ€™s a big step up to League 1, and it remains to be seen whether that leap is too much for all the trialists. Youโ€™d imagine that if theyโ€™re good enough, theyโ€™ll attract paid offers elsewhere. Nonetheless, itโ€™s been a very different summer transfer window โ€” one with a few left-field signings whose progress will be interesting to monitor.

Last meeting

Hamilton and Alloa last met in the League 1 play-offs in May 2024. It was a winner-take-all affair after a 2-2 first leg in Clackmannanshire. While the Wasps scored early through Quinn Coulson, Reghan Tumilty and Lewis Smith turned the scoreline on its head to make it 2-1 to the hosts. A complete moment of madness from Morgyn Neill saw the defender booked and then red-carded within a minute of the second goal. While the 10 men of Alloa battled back through Conor Sammon in the 57th minute, the man advantage proved too much, and Akeem Rose secured Hamiltonโ€™s passage into the final to face a beleaguered Inverness โ€” a match in which Accies ultimately won promotion comfortably.

The Opposition Report: Rangers

New Chapter at Ibrox – Ambition and Fresh Direction

The summer of 2025 marked a new era for Rangers. The arrival of new majority owners, led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, brought a wave of optimism to Ibrox. Former Southampton manager Russell Martin was appointed in June, tasked with blending his possession-based philosophy and replicating the exciting attacking style that saw the Saints promoted back to the Premier League.

Mixed start – European Heavyweights vs domestic struggles

Rangersโ€™ early-season form has been something of a tale of two campaigns. On the continental stage, they have handled high-pressure situations well, progressing through the Champions League qualifying rounds first with a tricky tie against Panathanaikos and then gaining a particularly impressive first-leg win over Viktoria Plzen that proved too difficult for the Czechs to overturn at home. They’ve set themselves up with a great chance of making the Champions League Group stages with a playoff against Club Brugge standing between Rangers and a guaranteed ยฃ15.64 million (โ‚ฌ18.62โ€ฏmillion).

Domestically, however, results have been slower to gather momentum. Opening with consecutive draws against Motherwell and Dundee, Rangers have found opponents prepared to sit deep and frustrate them, limiting the space for their attacking players to operate. While they have enjoyed large spells of possession, turning that control into clear chances has been a challenge. That’s brought inevitable pressure and the kind of criticism that goes hand in hand with the high standards set at Rangers.

Ones to watch

However, that being said having a cup weekend against lower league opposition may see expanded opportunities for the mavericks in Rangers squad to come in and impress.

Mikey Moore, everyone’s favourite FM24 wonderkid has finally been registered, and may well make his debut for the ‘Gers. Tottenham have reaffirmed their faith in the 18 year old loanee after handing him a new long term deal just this week and he’s an intriguing prospect to come into the Rangers team.

Thelo Aasgaard, the Norwegian international, has set himself apart from his peers while in the Championship. Few rivalled his combination of relentless shooting, consistent chance creation, and composure in possession – qualities underpinned by his commanding dribbling ability and repertoire of tricks. Though injuries have hampered his summer, the upcoming clash with Alloa could mark his first appearance at Ibrox.

Hamza Igamane – the Morrocan has only managed 15 minutes at the tail end of the 2-0 win over Panathanaikos this term but Russell Martin praised him for his ‘raw natural ability’ and may well have a chance to prove himself with Cyriel Dessers knee injury sustained against Viktoria Plzen. Last season he managed 16 goals with some exceptional strikes. A finisher with both feet, and a nutmeg connoisseur, he’s an extremely enjoyable player to watch.

Avengers jokes are also banned for this weekend – the inevitable headline for Oliver ‘Antman and the Wasps’ – is sure to feature somewhere if the Finnish international picks his killer passes in the final third and Djeidi Gassama – ‘the Gasman’ – so named for his ability to ignite games are other obvious candidates to keep an eye on but from an Alloa perspective we might hope to see them rested with bigger fish to fry coming up for our hosts.

The last meeting

Rangers last meeting with Alloa was on trophy day in 2016. Alloa pegged Rangers back early as Michael Duffy raced through to score a pinpoint bottom corner finish to put a potential dampener on any title celebrations. James Tavernier grabbed an equaliser on the cusp of half time but the Champions failed to deliver three points against Jack Ross’ already relegated Wasps.

The head to head

Alloa have somewhat surprisingly garnered a very good record in the head to head. The teams shared a division over 2014-16 and met each other in the 2014-15 Petrofac Cup semi-final. A Greig Spence double and a goal from Ryan McCord saw Alloa pick up the first win in their history against the Glasgow giants.

It means in the last 9 games Alloa have won 1, drawn 5 and lost 3 – a very respectable run for the Wee County side.

Can the 2025/26 crop of Alloa stars produce a cup shock on the grandest of stages in Scottish football? Before kickoff it’s a challenge that few believe that they can overcome, but one thing is for sure, dreams are made for nights like this.
