Alloa Athletic v Dumbarton

2 - 3
Full Time

Reaction

Alloa Athletic introduced their three new signing during the January transfer window – James Bloom, Kevin Motion & Nathan Taggart in an effort to freshen up the team which is desperate to regain winning form. Once again the team created numerous chances but our defensive frailties at present were again to cost the team dear. The Wasps had fallen 2-0 behind before Kevin Motion brought the team back into the game with a great strike from a free kick to give him a scoring debut. Jim Lister who hand been a handful all afternoon then turned provider sending over a perfect cross which Bryan Prunty expertly headed back across goal and into the corner of the net, 2-2. At this stage there only looked one winner but Dumbarton striker Jon McShane went down on the edge of the box and Ryan McStay’s free kick went under the despairing Stephen Robertson for the winner.

allan maitland after errors cost dear

Well it’s another Saturday, another disappointing result obviously, I must say I thought the effort of the players today was magnificent – we were 2-0 down and still doing everything in our power to throw away goals, the first goal was a give away – we worked really hard to get back into the game and Kevin Motion scored a good goal, for the equaliser Jim Lister’s cross, then Bryan Prunty’s finish was fantastic so it was 2 – 2. At that stage all the ascendency was with us, I am sure at that stage Dumbarton would have been quite happy to take a point but we keep giving teams encouragement, giving away free kicks at the edge of the box – I reckon Dumbarton probably had 5 or 6 today and then of course the actual goal itself was another individual mistake. I am expecting a goal keeper of Stephen Robertson’s quality to save that, these are the things that are killing us and knocks the stuffing right out of the team, especially when you are on a losing run and yet again that has cost us dear, as I have said already I can’t fault the effort of the players, they are desperate to do well here, but individual mistakes are costing us really dear – if we have to score three goals in a game of football just to get a point then we have a massive problem – at the moment you can see from our results 4-1, 4-1, 3-2 we have a problem and we are trying hard to rectify it, we need to rectify it quickly if we are going to have any hope of getting into the play offs. At the moment what we just want to try and do is win a game of football. We now have a psychological problem which we saw in the Ayr United game when we played well for about 65 minutes and lost a terrible goal, it’s not just losing goals, it’s the way we are losing them – every goal is an individual mistake and it knocks the stuffing out of the side – you could see that again today when being on top at 2 – 2 and trying to win the game, Dumbarton score and it took us 10 minutes to recover from that. We are obviously having problems and on a losing run and we need to try and rectify this. We need to get ourselves into winning a game – a scrappy 1-0 with the ball hitting someone on the backside in the last minute to win the game! Once you get a victory the confidence changes and at the moment we are a team who are playing with not a lot of confidence when we lose a goal. The players were working so hard to get themselves back into the game and having done that we then throw away another goal, when you set your wall up you have to make the save. Kevin Motion gave the goal keeper little chance with our goal but on Dumbarton’s winning goal I expected Stephen Robertson to make that save because he had shown him that side so he has to do his job and obviously he has not managed that. I brought him to the club to do better than that, today was a bad day for him.
