Raith Rovers v Alloa Athletic
The Wasps” reached their fifth Play-Off final on Saturday at Stark’s Park after being the only team to defeat Raith Rovers in the league this season. Nobody could deny “The Wasps” were the better team over the two legs, winning 4-1 on aggregate. Having recorded a 2-0 victory earlier in the week at The Indodrill Stadium in the first leg, a scoreline which many on the evening believed could have been extended and the visitors were let off lightly.
Raith Rovers started the second game at Starks Park on the front foot looking for an early goal to give them a lifeline but the Alloa defence stood solid. Indeed the breakthrough came at the other end which silenced the home support. Raith Rovers captain Kyle Benedictus holding back Ross Stewart to give away the free kick, which Jordan Kirkpatrick executed with great style.
It was a brilliant free kick from Jordan Kirkpatrick, who the previous Saturday at the other end of the ground was only denied by a finger tip save by Graeme Smith.
Within seven minutes of the second half, Raith Rovers finally managed to get the ball past Neil Parry in the Alloa goal and they were desperate to try and get a second to the extent four of the Rovers players tried to wrestle the ball quickly from Neil Parry which resulted in a the referee issuing 3 yellow cards.
With time running out and still losing 3-1 on aggregate, Ross Stewart, who had ran himself into the ground scored the killer 4th goal to end Barry Smith’s side chance to “Roar Back”.
jim goodwin after reaching playoff final
Delighted with our overall performance in both legs of the Semi-Final Tie, we were the better team over the two legs; I donโt think anybody would disagree with that or the end result. Raith Rovers are a fantastic team and came so close to winning the League title, so we knew we would have to be at our best, but the players stood up to everything, to a man, right from the strikers back to the goalkeeper, they were outstanding, even the substitutes when they came on contributed and made an impact doing what you ask them to do and I thought we managed the games particularly well at times, particularly after conceding an early goal in the second half there was still plenty time on the clock from a Raith Rovers point of view to get another goal, we had to stand up to that and I just thought it was a great performance. We knew Raith Rovers would throw everything at us in the second half, we discussed it at half-time and we would look to pick our right moments to counter attack and get at them and I thought we did that really well. Obviously the last goal killed them off and we could all breathe an awful lot easier after that.
It was a brilliant free-kick from Jordan Kirkpatrick only a week ago at the other end of the ground when their goalkeeper made a wonderful save but โKirkyโ tried his luck again today and I donโt think he could have hit it any sweeter, however the kick-off after it was interesting, but the goal was a great moment in the game. There have been some very good individual performances from the lads but collectively as a unit they have been excellent, to be the only team to have come here all season and get a win it speaks volumes of what we put into it.
Ross ran himself into the ground and it was fitting he got his reward with the winning goal, he has been outstanding since he came and joined us on loan, he is probably up there with the best strikers in the league there is no doubting about that, personally I believe he can move on to the next level, I think St. Mirren are lucky to have him, there is still a bit of developing to do for the big man but he has so many good attributes, he has been excellent for us as have a number of the other players as well. We have a number of our boys who have been named in the PFA Team of the Year which speaks volumes of what their piers think of them as well.
Delighted but we now have another difficult game to look forward to next week so it is important we recover properly do the right things and get rid of all the knocks and bumps that we have picked up over the last couple of legs and make sure we are right to go again on Wednesday. I think Steve Aitken is one of the most under rated managers in Scotland, for the job that he has done with Dumbarton, to keep them in that league for the number of years he has is incredible. I think Brechin City showed how difficult it is when you go up to the Championship as a part time club, so I have the greatest respect for Steve Aitken and we know they are a very well organised difficult team to break down, I have watched them a couple of times live towards the end of the season and I have footage of them I have also been watching in preparation of next week, so we have done our homework we know what we have to do but I have said it before and I will say it again โ We donโt fear anybodyโ and I really didnโt care who we got be it Arbroath, Raith or Dumbarton, I know if our boys reach the level as they are capable of they are capable of beating any of these teams. To do that we have to defend as well as we have done up till now and we have players in the forward areas who can hurt anyone, we are really looking forward to it, we go with no apprehension what so ever and look forward to the game.
Our support was great today, we are always grateful to our supporters, we are a small club but they can make a big difference and I thought they were excellent today, I would also like to say thank you to the Raith Rovers fans who stuck around after the game as well, I thought that was a nice touch and a class act from them as well, I have never seen that before the players certainly appreciated it but I think that speaks volumes how much they appreciated what we had done against difficult full time opposition not just how we managed to grind out the result but the way we tried to play the game overall over the two legs, letโs just hope we can now go and get the job done next week.

Raith Rovers v Alloa Athletic
On Saturday at Starks Park, Alloa Athletic proved against Raith Rovers as they had the previous Sunday against Ayr United, that they are a match for any team on their day and now go into the Championship Play-Off Semi-Final 1st leg on Wednesday night, again against Raith Rovers at the Indodrill Stadium with great confidence.
The home Raith Rovers support, 4400 of the crowd came in great expectation but it was “The Wasps” who went closest to scoring hitting the woodwork twice in the first half along with Kris Renton’s header being cleared off the line by Jason Thomson on the stroke of half-time.
In the second half Raith Rovers had more of the possession but Alloa always looked dangerous on the counter attack. Alloa keeper Neil Parry made a “Man of the Match” performance to claim his 11th clean sheet of the season and win the Ladbrokes League One Golden Glove Award.
The closest the home side came to clinching the important winning goal came in time added on when Lewis Vaughan effort was blocked by Alloa substitute Daryll Meggatt.
“The Wasps” wanted to go into the Play Off matches with good momemteum and if they can play the way we know we can then then we will have a great chance.
jim goodwin after denying raith rovers the title
The game plan before the game from our own point of view today was to be hard to beat, to not put too much energy into the game, we sat off the game rather than play our normal game of going pressing teams high up the pitch with Wednesday in mind, at the same time the message to the boys was โLook if Raith are good enough to break us down and get the goal that they need to go and win the game, then fair play to themโ
However I think we have put in two very professional performances in the last couple of games and I donโt think anyone could question my players or the club for lying down to anyone, I could easily have played a load of kids and let them fight it out, but we tried to be fair we are a professional team and club, from these two games who ever goes on to win the league will have earned the right to win it and that was evident today, the boys put their bodies on the line, it would have been very easy for them to down tools and not go into tackles but that was certainly not the case they are a very proud bunch of lads and I was delighted with their overall performance, I know Raith Rovers will be disappointed but we go again on Wednesday.
After the game I said to the lads this is a great example of what might come in a couple of weeks, there are three good teams in the Play-Offโs against us – Raith Rovers, Arbroath and Dumbarton and there will come a period in every game against that quality of opposition they will have a spell in the game and at that stage you need to regroup, backs to the wall and see it through be resilient and I think the players did that today, it is great for me to see the togetherness and team spirit in the team, Wednesday night will be completely different we will play more on the front foot on Wednesday and we will go and try and win the game but today Iโm just really proud of the players, I asked them to go and do a job and they have done it.
Delighted with a clean sheet, Neil Parry made a couple of great saves at crucial stages in the game but at the same time I thought we were dangerous on the break. In the first half Jordan Kirkpatrick had a great effort their keeper made a great save tipping it onto the post and later just before half-time Jordan had a free-kick which the keeper touched onto the post and Kris Rentonโs header was cleared off the line – we could easily have taken the three points but at the end of the day we are delighted with the performance, the result wasnโt the biggest factor and congratulations to Ayr United in becoming league champions.

Very disappointed with the end result, the first half I thought we played really well, the second half I donโt think we started we couldnโt get out of our own half for the first fifteen minutes in the second half.
I thought we played great in the first half, dominated the game without really creating any real clear cut chances. I knew that Barry would be looking for a reaction from his players at the start of the second half, we spoke about that at half-time, to expect them to come out all guns blazing and they did, that didnโt surprise us but the first goal for me was so disappointing, to have defended as well as we have, to concede a goal so soft – the cross comes in but we have to deal with it, Greig Spence is free two yards from goal with a simple header for him. We highlighted these things during the week and unfortunately we werenโt able to snuff it out. Goals change games I know it is an old clichรฉ but it is a fact, we kept going right until the end, I felt if we had made it 2-1 earlier in the game and given us a bit more time on the clock it might have given us a better chance to take something from the game.
Very disappointed to lose the last two games, I think we have played well in both games but yet we have nothing to show for it, everybody who wasnโt here does care how well we might have played they just look at the end result and we have now picked up no points in our last two games and I feel as if we deserved to have a couple at least.
PJ was booked just before half-time for simulation, I donโt think there was enough contact for to warrant a penalty, there was a possible coming together, I donโt think it was a dive, I understand why the referee has booked him, if he deemed it was that way but it is not something we encourage and the wee man is so quick in and around the box the slightest touch could set him off balance but it is not one we will fall out over.

So pleased for the players, I think I said this after the Falkirk game that people think because you are in this role you become obsessed about it and results for yourself, but the players work so hard and they have performed over the last three games the way they have trained as a group not just the players on the pitch but the whole squad and I am just delighted they get their rewards because they have had an awful lot of knocks this season, itโs not easy its human nature that you lose confidence and a bit belief, so delighted for them tonight and Iโve told them to enjoy it, some people say donโt get carried away, go and enjoy it and develop that taste for it and hopefully there will be more of these days between now and the end of the season.
I think the game could have went either way and I think Raith had the abundance of clear cut chances dropping around our penalty box, I thought we defended brilliantly as a team, as the game from halfway through the first half we started to get to grips to it a lit bit more and started to look more of a threat, I thought in the Falkirk game we could have had a case to get something out of the game, which we didnโt, and certainly Raith Rovers could have a call they could have taken something from the game tonight, so thatโs just what happens sometimes, you need little bit of good fortune and we had them tonight, listen of course Iโm going to say I thought we deserved the victory because these guys put an awful lot into this game tonight.
Everybody who played and came on tonight was terrific and thatโs important, to keep a squad happy is not an easy thing, especially when these guys make the sacrifices they do, so to see the reaction of those who were involved was brilliant, even after we had to reshuffle things due to injuries, it comes down to attitude and desire, you can talk as much as you like about tactics and shape and ideas of how to play but if you donโt have the right attitude and desire it doesnโt matter and we had that in abundance tonight.
Colin Hamilton is an example of a player whose season has maybe been a bit of a difficult adjustment for him coming up a division, I spoke to him after the St. Mirren game, I hadnโt really had a chance before to work with him, but since then we spoke about a couple of little things on sometimes you just have to concentrate on doing your job to begin with and I think he has done that in the last couple of weeks and I think he has been excellent, be a defender first and foremost and anything after that is a bonus, he certainly had a couple of important tackles and blocks in the game tonight and looked solid defensively.
Michael Doyle, it was what it was, and then we have managed to secure him on a short term contract at the moment, Michael still has an ambition to play full time, if that opportunity comes up for him then we wonโt stand in his way, but if he continues to be available for us he will be in our squad, look Michael has been a terrific player for this club, even long before I was here, the club have a lot of respect for him he has been great and so we have an understanding if something happens we will look at it, if not I will be delighted for the club.
Isaac deserved his opportunity for how he has performed at Brechin, circumstances we donโt have a lot of options in the striking department, speaking to him after the game, he said it was different for him, more difficult, people think there is no difference in the leagues, there is, he was playing against some good defenders tonight, even the tempo and pace of the game, it was a challenge for him and I think he did ok and he enjoyed it and played his part in us winning the game, Iโm sure he will be pleased with himself.
We must now develop that taste for winning which is an important thing and hopefully the players have started to do that, Saturday will be another huge test for us but one thing I am really determined to do is turn round our home results because we need to do that to give ourselves a platform, coming to places like this and winning is great but without picking up victories at home it makes it even more difficult.

This was a game for large periods “The Wasps” played attractive football and they would have been disappointed not to have taken at least one of them in the first half, but goals change games. It was important for “The Wasps” not to conceed an early goal as they had done in past two league games, but it took a spectacular goal to open the scoring for the home side and five minutes later they scored the crucial second to take a hold in the game. The end result looks cruel on Danny Lennon’s side but they will know themselves it could have been so much different if they had scored the crucial opening goal.
DANNY LENNON AT STARKS PARK
If the half time whistle had been the full time whistle I would be a very happy chap at this time, but the two halves were a totally different contrast, a lot of pleasing stuff particularly in the first half, we looked compact, we defended as a team, we broke as a team, we passed the ball well and created good opportunities. Likewise did Raith Rovers, I thought it was quite an open and exciting game in the first half, but in the second half it took a wonderful goal, you can actually see as that ball goes in, the mentality then changed and we stopped doing all the good things which got us success in the first half and we went longer and more direct and that put pressure upon us that we got deeper and deeper and gave a quality Raith Rovers side time on the ball. Itโs important that we once again learn from that, I think you can always learn in any defeat, but what we have to do is rise above that, sometimes you just have to hold your hand up and say what a wonderful strike that was, and you can do absolutely nothing about it, you canโt let a goal like that change your mentality, if we had continued to play in the manner we did in the first half we would have still caused Raith Rovers one or two problems, so it is very difficult, the second and third goal, one from a set play which always is bad to lose and the third one we drop runners, which again is very basic, although we were pleased with the first half performance, overall we have got to prove that we can do both sides of the game as well as we did in the first half for the full ninety minutes.
A lot of people have us down for finishing in the bottom of the table, so we are so far proving these people correct but we will certainly take that challenge and go out there and prove thatโs not the case, I certainly believe we have a good balance and that was evident in our first half performance but what we have to do is bring these qualities for a full ninety minutes and we will then give ourselves a good platform but we need to make sure we do the basics right, we do not drop runners, very basic things have cost us severely. The goal gave Raith Rovers a massive lift and we have not had that the last couple of weeks, we need to make sure that the quality of chances that we did create especially in the first half we have to be ruthless in front of goal and ready to take these chances.
I saw a change in the mentality when the first goal went in and that was my message to the players, we needed to let the game settle down again before we lost the second goal so quickly thereafter. When the second goal goes in it became more difficult but if we had got one back we would have put them back on the back foot but losing the third it was game over.
The frustrating thing was when we were playing well we needed to get in front, we created good opportunities and had good possession but we failed to hit the net, what was pleasing is the way we created more clear cut chances that we did against Elgin City, but I want to stick with the positives as much as we have got to learn and we move forward, they are a hard working group of players , they will come in on Tuesday and they will give absolutely everything again but we have to make sure we play for the full ninety minutes. Points are important and thatโs what keeps you in this league but I have asked the players to go home tonight and look at the good things we did in the game and learn from the mistakes and if they do that and show the same appetite and hunger and belief they will be ok and they will give every team in this league, perhaps outside Rangers, they will give every single team problems if they continue to play like they can and stick by it for the full ninety minutes.

Raith Rovers v Alloa Athletic
The Wasps display at Starks Park against Raith Rovers was probably a reflection on our league campaign this season. Weโve gifted too many goals and passed up too many chances in a league which was always going to be difficult. We again contributed to our own downfall when we lost a bad defensive goal after creating chances of our own. The players never gave in and Liam Buchanan scored a great equaliser only four minutes after the team had gone behind, his twelfth goal of the season and his second of the week. However losing another goal so early in the second half again put the team behind again. The team battled on and looked to get back into the game but the home side nearly caught us out as the team pushed forward for an equaliser, Craig McDowall had to be at his best to keep the Raith Rovers forwards from increasing their lead. We now go into a massive game next Saturday against Livingston, the important thing is not to think about other teams, but only look after ourselves and secure a victory which would be massive. There have been some wonderful highs this season but as we enter the final games of the season we have six league games and one cup final to look forward, letโs go and show what we can do.

Gutted at losing the game, in the first half I felt we had a spell when we were on top in the game, we created a couple of better than half chances but didnโt take them and the goal we lose at any level, it is a poor goal to lose, that seems to be where we are at this moment giving away cheap goals, I have said to the players in the dressing room, just clear the danger and we will argue about it at half-time, obviously there was a wee bit of indecision, but the striker showed good instinct to get in between Michael and Craig but from our point of view it was a poor goal to lose. Then we worked hard to get back in the game and Liam took his goal well but at the start of the second half switched off, but we will pick the boys back up at training on Tuesday and go again, nobody has really gained any points today in terms of the teams in the bottom three and we are all fighting it out to gain eighth place in the table. The players are fighting hard and on another day in the first half if we could have edged in front then maybe we might have been able to hang on. In the second half we lost our shape a bit as we pushed to get back in the game, I put on Michael Chopra and Greg Rutherford later in the game and had to sacrifice a wee bit in midfield, Craig had a couple of good saves to keep us in the game as we had to go man for man at the back. Our best spell was in the first half but we could never edge our nose in front and I think the second goal so early in the second half knocked the stuffing out of us a wee bit. We changed our formation but really huffed and puffed and never created too much in the second half. Next weekโs game now becomes massive. We cannot afford to give away cheap goals but for our goals we have to work really hard, Liam took his goal well, it was good goal from our point of view, Liam held the ball up well and turned and had a decent hit into the bottom corner, which was pleasing, good for Liam, but he is a player who never lacks confidence. For next week we will be as we were in the fact that the chairman has asked me to take care of the team in the meantime and until he tells me different, but Iโm sure if something was to change the club would make an official statement but at this stage I will continue game from game,ย ย the players are fighting tooth and nail, but Iโd just wish we could get a winย ย even if it takes a scrappy 1-0 victory for us but it doesnโt seem to be the case at this time but we will keep our spirits up, they were down after the game today, but they will be ready again to go next week, although we will need to check on Jason who looked to pull up after getting a knock with his hamstring, we are hoping itโs a tweak but it might need time, in the short term he might have to miss a couple of games, we have some walking wounded and are maybe top heavy up front just now but we will be ready for another huge game next Saturday against Livingston.

โThe Waspsโ collected a well deserved point at Starkโs Park against Raith Rovers with a very positive display in which the players in Black & Gold took all the credit after the home fans booed their team from the pitch at half-time & full-time. Indeed there would be few people in the crowd could have argued that Alloa Athletic had the best chances in the game in which Grant Murrayโs side rarely threatened the Alloa goal. The point moved โThe Waspsโ of the bottom of the league and hopefully the players will take credit confidence in this display and the fact they always looked like taking something from the game.

A great spirited performance today and even when we went down to ten men the grit and determination made sure we didnโt concede another goal and itโs a great point at a difficult place to come and we look to move forward from that performance. We definitely got a reaction after our poor display last week against Cowdenbeath, we werenโt flat this week, I felt it was a little flat last week and I felt the boys deserved everything they got today. We have had good performances but probably not the results we have wanted and this week we do look to build on this performance, the result we would have loved three points but to come to Kirkcaldy and take a point โ we will accept, I was more pleased with the grit and determination by the players and how hard they worked to make sure we came away with something. We had the best chances in the game especially in the first half, we felt that we did extremely well but we knew they would come out in the second half and put us under a wee bit pressure but when it came down to it we were able to withstand that pressure and still had chances at 1-1 in the game. I donโt like singling out players, but Ryan McCord was fantastic, he did well but it was a good team performance and thatโs the most important thing. The team performance today was excellent along with their spirit and determination to get something from the game. Stephen Simmons went off due to a back spasm, we will just have to wait and see how he is. I went in and spoke to John Fleming, the refereeโs chief after the game, but I donโt think the decisions went for us today โ at the red card, it was a foul, but the referee has the decision whither it is a booking or not, I donโt think itโs a booking but all we ask for is consistency and what I would say was โ Mark Docherty is going through late on in the second half and he is pulled back and if you get pulled back that is a booking, a foul and a booking but the referee never booked the Raith Rovers player, now I donโt want players booked left, right and centre, but all I ask for is consistency and at this point, itโs not a criticism by any means but we donโt feel as a club we are getting consistency in decisions.

I am delighted with four points out of six from our last two games because they were two very difficult away trips. I was delighted the way the players dug in when they had to in the second half especially after the shift they put in against Morton at the weekend and we showed some good resilience. The boys are all very fit. We are a team that work very hard for the full ninety minutes and I think that shows. Liam is just a young boy but he has came in and did very well for us. He still has a lot to learn in the game but he definitely going in the right direction. There were at 1-1 some small chances for us. They had the majority of the play and there was a lot of good blocks from our defenders but you always hope you can maybe nick one on the break after defending so well. We just need to concentrate on ourselves and take all of the positivity from the last few games into the weekend now against Hamilton. Hopefully now the boys are starting to get that wee bit of confidence coming back as well as some self belief and we will take that into Saturdayโs game.
