Alloa Athletic v Aberdeen
Manager Allan Maitland was very proud of his team after their Homecoming Scotland Scottish Cup tie against Premier League opponents Aberdeen at Recreation Park in front of a sell out crowd of 3,013. This was a game “The Wasps” did not deserve to lose, apart from the opening twenty minutes in which time Aberdeen took the lead, but the goal, a shot from Chris Maguire took a huge deflection of Lee Miller who has been recently named Clydesdale Bank Premier League Player of the month for December, 2008 to give “The Dons” a fortune lead. Alloa equalised three minutes before half time, Dougie Hill had put the ball in the net, but referee Steven Nicholls had already blown for a penalty which Andy Scott converted. Alloa restricted Aberdeen to only two opportunities in the 90 minutes, one which Darren Mackie cracked off the bar and the other when Sone Aluko nipped in to score the winner. Alloa had a lot of the game played really really well, showed great energy, pinned Aberdeen back for long spells of the game but did not have a killer instinct in front of goal. In the 5th round Aberdeen have been given a home tie against East Fife.
allan maitland after aberdeen deny alloa 5th round appearance
I’m very proud of the team, but obviously disappointed to lose the game, I felt in the 90 minutes of the game, Aberdeen hit the bar in the second half when they created a really good chance, but Aberdeen didn’t create much in the 90 minutes and we had a lot of the ball, I’m not saying we should have won it, but I don’t think we deserved to lose. In the second half the goal was just a long kick up the pack which Aberdeen won the flick on and it was a great finish but that was maybe the difference. We had a lot of opportunities in the second half when we one on one and the final pass wasn’t just right because we had no clear cut opportunities and I’m talking about our goalkeeper not having made a save Jamie Langfield didn’t have a save to make either but the effort was magnificent and I thought we played really well, we obviously had a plan today to set up against Aberdeen – trying to keep close to Mark Kerr and Sone Aluko and try and stop them playing and I think that worked really well for us, but we still got beat!
That is still a problem, great effort, fantastic effort, played really well, showed they can compete against Aberdeen , we can’t beat them yet cause we are still not at that stage, we lack a cutting edge to our game but I’m proud of the players, proud of the effort everybody’s put in and it was one terrible day out there. Its been a great day for Alloa Athletic Football Club, we would like to have won it but it wasn’t to be, all you can ask your players to do is give you everything they have on a Saturday afternoon and we give that every Saturday we won’t be far away, I’m pleased with the effort and everything else, disappointed to lose.
For the penalty there was no doubt it was a penalty because our player had been pulled back and in fairness the referee had blown before we put the ball in the net. I thought a couple of times later we didn’t get the advantage when the referee stopped the game but the referee had a hard task and he did well. Aberdeen have had their complaints about the park but in a day like today could you imagine playing at the old Ochilview or old Recs, my God, our parks fantastic for the weather so it was a great game of football for us, we would like to have won it for the supporters but it was not to be. The suggestion that Aberdeen should have had a man sent off at the penalty incident was unfounded, I don’t like to see anybody sent off and I didn’t think it was a sending off, it was like the situation at corner kicks or free kicks when someone is pulling but didn’t merit a last man sending off , no I thought the referee was fine, but I would have liked him to give us a second penalty , it might have been the only way we were going to score! I thought we had a lot of possession in the second half, breaking away and getting possession on the edge of the box but just didn’t have the final cutting pass or a presence in the box. You know you are always going to get one chance and our one chance came with five minutes to go when Andy Ferguson was at the back post and he saw it too late and headed past the post, you can only give your best and unfortunately that was our best and it wasn’t good enough, but a great effort and I’m proud of them.

Alloa Athletic v Stranraer
For the second time this season Stranraer have managed to come back and snatch a 2-2 draw in games against “The Wasps”, when Alloa Athletic should have collected full points. Failure to convert chances and having the worst goals against record at present in the league is why the team is still at the wrong end of the league table. Once again on Saturday the team had the lions share of possession and chances to win the game but could not hold on for three more league points. After defeating Brechin City the previous week it had been hoped another three points would be a great boost, before next Saturday’s derby against Stirling Albion.
allan maitland after stranraer draw
In many ways today’s game sums up our season , I thought our start was absolutely terrible, the goal we gave away was sloppy at the very least even before it got to the back post where Scot Buist should have dealt with it , so we found ourselves a goal down and this creates a bit anxiety, we then proceed to miss three or four great chances but Scott Black in that spell played really well and had three or four really good saves, we got back into the game at the rebound from the penalty kick and at that stage we should be bombing on and going to win the game. The second half I think we start the game alright, Bomber misses a great chance with a header but he scores anyway and we get ourselves ahead but for some reason instead of being able to show a bit of composure we continue to chase the game, it was incredible and the goal we lose comes from – the ball’s in our box we manage to break away , we have four bodies in their box , the ball should have been played across the face of the goal, we lose possession of the ball in their box , we had three midfield players in their box at that time, so all of a sudden you have three midfield players and two forwards out of the game and they break away and we find ourselves stretched, good teams don’t do that. It shows there is a lot of work still to be done in our team at a stage in the game we were in total control of the game, we must go and win these games, there is no excuse for not winning today. So we are disappointed not to have won the game, all credit to Stranraer for battling away showing great spirit today but it’s a game we should have put away, in the first half with the number of chances we had and once we got ahead we should never have allowed them back in the game, that’s twice we have let Stranraer back in games with late goals after being 2-1 ahead and not finishing off matches. Last week we managed to beat Brechin City, hanging on at the end , but we have lost too many goals this season which isn’t good enough and we have failed to kill teams off when we have been given the chance, today was another example of that, so very disappointing for us, today was a magnificent opportunity for us to get above some of the other teams in our league but we have failed to take that opportunity, unless we can beat teams like Stranraer then we are going to continue to find ourselves at the bottom end of this league, we will try to address this with a victory over Stirling Albion next week.

Alloa Athletic v Brechin City
Back to back victories against Brechin City and Raith Rovers at Recreation Park, albeit one was a Scottish Cup replay and the other in the League, showing on their day Alloa Athletic can still look to defeat anybody in their league. Brechin City took an early lead through their top scorer Gary Twigg, netting his 10th goal of the season, but two goals in a five minute burst saw the game turn on it’s head and Alloa take control, Andy Ferguson was on hand to score the equaliser before Dougie Wilson crossed for Jamie Stevenson to volley home the goal which was to be the winner. In the second half Brechin City started to show why they had only lost one previous game in the league this season and pushed Alloa deeper into defence. Late in the game Alloa keeper Raymond Jellema was their hero when he saved Iain Diack’s spot kick after Chris Townsley had been adjudged to have handled the ball. Three important points for “The Wasps” which were the perfect Christmas present.
allan maitland after brechin city win
I’m sure you have heard this before, but football’s a funny game, for the last three or four weeks we have played really well and not got an awful lot from the games but today I thought we played well for 20 minutes and the rest of the time Brechin City were the better team and played the game like a team at the top end of the league, particularly in the second half and should have won the game, so for me today’s victory made up for e.g. the East Fife game, when I thought we should have won, last week we had an hour of the game when we played really well, but our goal keeper today I thought was fantastic, having not done well last week I thought he done really well today. The penalty kick save was excellent but unfortunately we are not getting breaks – we have penalty incidents we don’t get and teams against us seem to get penalties quite easily. I’m not saying the referee was wrong but our players say to me that the referee said that he leant into it and Chris Townsley said “the ball was going to strike my arm so I leant forward and it hit me at the top of the shoulder – if I don’t move it was going to strike my arm and if I lean in the referee decides to give a penalty?”. We are just not getting these and it is going against us today and against East Fife but I am not here to criticise referees, I think their job is hard enough as it is. We are really relived to win – we are pleased to get ourselves 3 points in a game we maybe didn’t deserve it, we played really well here in the game against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup, we played decent last week, a great result today and now we need to try and replicate that next week against Stranraer, which is a massive game for us and then hopefully this way Alloa Athletic fans can enjoy their Christmas and hopefully next week we can give them something to enjoy their New Year. We played a very good Brechin City side who started the game much better than us, certainly finished the game a lot better than us and thankfully we had a 20 minute spell when Jinky, Andy Ferguson & Jamie Stevenson caused them a lot of problems, we are pleased with that, but let’s not take it away from Brechin City, they were the better side.

Ayr United v Alloa Athletic
Alloa manager Allan Maitland was an angry man as he watched his side make basis errors which have again cost the club dearly. Ayr United were well fired up for this game and in fairness started the game at such a pace “The Wasps” could have been three goals down inside the first twenty minutes, ex Alloa Athletic player Scott Agnew was the man to break the deadlock. After Ayr United scored Alloa gradually forced their way back into the match, but the turning point in the game was when Scot Buist received his second yellow card early in the second half after getting himself caught on the ball, when he had plenty of time to clear the situation. Alloa still attacked and had chances but Ayr United hit them with two late goals on the counter which Raymond Jellema might have done better and Alex Williams will not get an easier double coming on with fifteen minutes left.
allan maitland after defeat by ayr united
Ayr United having not played for a few weeks were obviously keen to get out the traps, I thought the first twenty minutes they were excellent and we were fortunate it was only 1-0 at the end of that spell, they had headers at goal and shots flashing across our goal and Scott Agnew also had one which he volleyed over the bar as well, they started really well. After the goal I thought we got a bit of a grip in the game in the centre of the park and started playing much better and we had chances in that spell, Brown Ferguson in particular had an opportunity when he stole in at the back post. In at half time a goal down, but very much still in the game, but then Scot Buist’s sending off was totally inexcusable, he has come back into the team and has been doing really well, we are at a stage in the game we are dominating and trying to create chances and he gets sent off, its killing us!
When we are dominating games we are unable to score, when the opposition are dominating games their scoring goals and that’s a bad mix for me, that’s the reason we are second bottom, our decision making is poor, Scot Buist’s decision to dilly dally on the ball and having lost it to pull the player down is inexcusable, I thought the referee was excellent and handled everything really well and even at that when we were down to ten men we were still doing well, still trying to get into their end of the park, we had a situation when Andy Ferguson must score, but the ball would just not sit down in the box, John Grant had a chance with a header at the back post, we must score when we are on top, we seem unable to do so. Then for the second goal our goalkeeper, not sure what he was doing, the second goal has killed us again and the third goal was irrelevant but for anybody picking the paper up it looks like an easy game for Ayr United but it didn’t seem like that to me, but effort doesn’t win you things what we need is effort and a bit of guile and be able to make the right decisions at the right time, we had none of that today, well plenty of effort but our decision making was dreadful and of course going down to ten men didn’t help, we are where we are and we deserve to be there, we need to get our finger out.

Alloa Athletic v Raith Rovers
There could be few complaints as Alloa Athletic progressed to the next round of this season’s Homecoming Scotland Scottish Cup to set up a home tie against Premier League side, Aberdeen. After a game of few chances at Stark’s Park, Alloa knew they had a good chance in the replay at Recreation Park. The first half was again a poor affair, but in the second half Alloa took the game to Raith Rovers but as so often has happened, they lacked the killer punch in front of goal. Against the run of play Raith Rovers broke the deadlock, a hopeful ball into the Alloa box was not headed far enough out of the box and Gary Wales scored from 12 yards. Raith had their best spell of the game before Alloa Athletic scored twice within two minutes, substitute Andy Ferguson’s header came back off the right hand post and Brown Ferguson knocked the equaliser in. Two minutes later Jamie Stevenson was pulled down as he tried to burst into the box, Brown Ferguson took the free kick , curling a glorious shot in off the crossbar to set up a fourth round tie against Aberdeen on Saturday 10th January, 2009 at Recreation Park.
allan maitland after progression over raith
Obviously, I know people were disappointed we dug in the first game and didn’t make it an open game, the importance again tonight for the first 45 minutes was just to make sure we were still in the game, I thought there was nothing in the first half, it was a pretty drab affair in many ways but there is no doubt in the second half I thought we were the better team from the start and Raith Rovers scored against the run of play and then they had a 15 minute spell it could have gone 2-0 rather than 1-1 I thought I had made a couple of substitutions and it took 10 minutes or so for them to get into the game. We showed great character to get back in the game, great run from John Grant, great cross and Andy Ferguson was there to win the header, it helps having a centre forward in the box trying to win headers, for all the play we had we never had a real presence in front of goal and Bombers done great to follow it in, the second goal was a great piece of play my Jamie Stevenson, trying to burst into the box and he was pulled down, great free kick from Brown Ferguson, it was a free kick I was expecting Jamie to hit I must say, but it was a great free kick from Bomber and over the piece I felt we deserved it, I thought our second half was much more open, which is obviously what John wanted us to do, and having done that I thought we were the better team in the second half. It has been a good day for us, people talk about the incentive of Aberdeen in the next round, we can’t think of any of that because we were playing again a really good Raith Rovers side although I do think they miss something when Kevin Smith is not available, but for our point of view we like to play them here, we do well against them and I think that showed again tonight. I think Raith will be disappointed in their display in the first game but tonight we were the better team and deserved to win the tie in my opinion. I thought the criticism after the first game was unwarranted, having lost 4-1 there at the start of the month, if we had went to Kirkcaldy and opened up we could have got beaten, the importance of the first game was to make sure we were still in the tie, and after an hour had Pat Scullion not been red carded we had Andy Ferguson, Jamie Stevenson and Dougie Wilson all on the bench to bring into the game and that was the plan, Pat getting sent off scuppered that plan and then we had no intentions of coming out after that and we were determined to hang on in and bring Raith Rovers back to Alloa, but tonight we were much more open and more attack minded, it was a great opportunity to win playing at home and we were determined to take that. The next round will be a great game for the fans and also for me coming from Aboyne, it’s a good game for Alloa Athletic Football Club and that’s the most important thing and hopefully between now and then we can put a bit of form together, we were excellent on Saturday against East Fife, we need to take tonight’s result into the game against Ayr United this Saturday, it’s a big game for us.

East Fife v Alloa Athletic
A controversial 65th minute penalty, secured a 1-0 win for East Fife against “The Wasps” in a match which Alloa Athletic will look back and wonder how they lost. The spot kick was awarded by referee Stephen Finnie after a push on Paul McManus by Dougie Hill was deemed to have prevented a goal scoring opportunity, despite the striker being a good few yards away from the ball and keeper Michael White looking to have had the situation under control.
Allan Maitland after East Fife game
It was a farcical decision and a farcical result. Dougie Hill simply blocked Paul McManus and it was never a penalty in a million years. That is now three penalties East Fife have had against us this season and all of them are dubious. The referee has given them a lifeline even though it was our inability to take chances that cost us the game. We controlled the game in the first half so to say that I’m disappointed is an understatement. We’ve played East fife twice this season, had three penalties against us, and all of them were dubious.
David Baikie – East Fife manager
The penalty, I don’t know, but ten minutes earlier Greig McDonald had been penalised for a similar thing and they got a free kick from it, so maybe the referee was just being consistent. We got three points without playing well, but three points is three points.

Raith Rovers v Alloa Athletic
“The Wasps” held Raith Rovers to a 0-0 draw in today’s Homecoming Scottish Cup 3rd round tie at Stark’s Park. Having lost 4-1 at the start of the month at the same ground manager Allan Maitland started the game with three centre backs in an effort to be defensively sound. This restricted Raith Rovers to very little goalmouths efforts, with Alloa having a strong bench, from which they could bring on players to win the game in the final quarter of the match. Two minutes into the second half Pat Scullion was dismissed for his second yellow card, restricting Alloa’s opportunities. We now can look forward to a replay, pencilled in for a week on Tuesday, 9th December at Recreation Park. The draw for the 4th round of this season’s Homecoming Scottish Cup takes place at Hampden Park on Monday and Alloa Athletic are very pleased still to be involved.
allan maitland after starks draw
First and foremost we are delighted to be in the draw for the next round , we would obviously have liked to win the game but it was always going to be a difficult game for us today. I thought Raith Rovers would play a high tempo game and on the back of that we decided to start with three centre backs and that was working really well, then Dougie Hill got injured and we had to change it, but our commitment and effort was excellent and it restricted Raith Rovers to only one chance in the first half, in the second half the early sending off didn’t help us, I had no qualms about it, he was a bit unfortunate in the fact he was the only player booked, but he appeared to catch Allan Walker a bit late so the sending off was fine. I thought the referee handed the game really well, so in the second half in was a case of hanging in, but we defended so much better than we have in previous weeks and our goalkeeper when called upon had one fantastic save at the bottom left post, but other that that I thought we restricted Raith Rovers to very few chances throughout the game – we didn’t have any, but a game at home to Raith Rovers is mightily more appealing to me than a game here at Stark’s Park, the replay a week on Tuesday should be an interesting game and obviously we will know by then, who we could play if we can win at Recreation Park. Raith Rovers are a good side, we respect that, we came here with a plan, it worked really well for us for the first 30 minutes that we didn’t lose an early goal, Dougie Hill got injured at a time when we would have changed it to a back four anyway, so that didn’t effect things too much, the sending off was disappointing, but the effort was tremendous, application tremendous and an unusual manner was our concentration which was tremendous and that has not been the case too often this season, we are pleased to be in the draw for the next round.
I anticipate Alloa Athletic will have a real go a week on Tuesday, it will be a completely different game from today, so I would expect us to have a real go at Raith Rovers and try and get at them, which we would have hoped to do late in the game today if we were still in it, but we didn’t get that opportunity. We all know Raith Rovers have a great threat up front with their three strikers, and I think Kevin Smith not playing today was a massive loss for Raith Rovers and a real boost for us I have to say, it will be a hard game a week on Tuesday, but it is one I feel we have a better chance than we did today.
We came with a plan to be defensively a lot better than at the start of the month when we lost 4-1, and the plan is that after an hour you are still in the game, unfortunately within that hour we had a player sent off, so that changes things, so it looks like that we came here for 90 minutes to pack the defence, that wasn’t the plan, the plan is to be defensively strong and ensure you are still in the game in the last 30 minutes and then have a go, on the bench we had Andy Ferguson, Jamie Stevenson, Dougie Wilson and Greig Spence, all attacking players to go on and win the game in the last 30 minutes, we just didn’t have that opportunity, unfortunately.

Alloa Athletic v Queen’s Park
Last Saturday’s defeat against Queen’s Park was another huge disappointment for everyone at Recreation Park, although Queen’s Park did have the best of the first half, had it not been for an uncharacteristic mistake by goalkeeper Raymond Jellema we might have got to half time at 0-0 and regrouped. Although the second half display was far more encouraging we had left ourselves with a mountain to climb for not starting the match in the proper manner and could not sneak a draw. This might have been different had the stand side linesman assisted the referee when there was a clear hand ball in the box late in the game.
allan maitland after queen’s park game
I would like to start by praising the referee from the Irish FA who was in charge today, I thought he was excellent. Having said that, he obviously couldn’t see the incident and relies on his linesman, but when a player punches the ball in the penalty box in any game I have seen that is a penalty kick, and we are down to ten men and looking to get any breaks we can in the game and there is absolutely no doubt that it was a penalty kick. Why the linesman, who understands it was a handball, believes it was unintentional, you can make up your own mind?
Having said all that I thought Queen’s Park were excellent in the first 45 minutes and deserved their lead, but the manner of their lead was very disappointing for me, in the sense that our first goalkeeper, who was in top of his game and had made three great saves, but a wrong decision and then compounded that wrong decision by chasing and bringing the player down, it would have been bad enough being 1-0 down, but then to get himself sent off makes it even worse. Young Michael has come on the park and his first touch of the ball is a fumble resulting in the second goal, instead of going in at half time not playing well but level with an opportunity to make changes to the team, we go in at half time 2-0 down and restricted in the number of changes which could be made and a player down. I thought young Michael came through the second half well and I was pleased for him to get through that, but it had left us a mountain to climb, our effort in the second half, particularly from the middle three was fantastic but it was just too much to ask, we had to score again in that spell when for 15-20 minutes we were right on top of the game, but sooner of later the extra man was going to count and our players would tire, but today shows no matter how much we have improved, if we don’t start games properly or if we think we are capable of beating anybody by just turning up, today proves that is just not the case, we were way below par in the first half, deserved everything we got and compounded that for making dreadful errors at the goals, the third goal was irrelevant at that stage, but if we had managed to get the penalty we might have sneaked a draw that would have been reward for our second half performance but it would have been unjust on Queen’s based on their first half display. It makes it all the more disappointing that with this result Queen’s leapfrog us in the league table and we mustn’t forget what’s happening behind us.
We are Alloa Athletic who only managed four points out of our first nine games and we cannot afford to revert to that sort of form again, I said at the end of the second quarter we would need to get ourselves to 20 points, so we are a long way from that and have four difficult games coming up in the next weeks – Raith Rovers, East Fife and Ayr United all away, before taking on Brechin City at home, so we need to show a dramatic improvement in our first half performances if we are to manage to take something from these games. We have a Scottish Cup tie to look forward to next week and on a more positive note – Dougie Wilson, Andy Ferguson and Chris Townsley will all be available for next Saturday and hopefully that will give the squad a wee boost and get everybody on their toes. We will be playing a Raith Rovers side on the top of their game with three really good forwards and I think if we don’t go there and be as positive as we possibly can and suffer any backlash from today it will be even more difficult , we have to go there in a positive frame of mind, based on the fact before today we have been playing well, lets see if we can cause them a problem, there will be changes.
Gardner Spiers – queen’s park manager
I thought we were excellent in the first half, although the goals came late in the first half but we had three or four other great chances and it is as well as we have passed the ball about with great movement for a long time, so that was encouraging. We said at half time we would expect Alloa to come out and have a go at us, I’m sure they would have got a talking to at half time and they did, we were a wee bit naïve to give the goal away so soon after half time and that put pressure on us we didn’t need, but to our credit we stood up to it and we had another two or three chances in the second half , so delighted, thought we thoroughly merited it, it was a game we had to win and that’s encouraging as well, if we can win the games we need to win, although it would be good to win them all, you know what I mean, it was important today to manage to get the three points and I thought our guys deserved it. We got three goals today and we could have had more, I think the fact we played so well, passed the ball so well was the reason for that, our spirit and energy was first class. I thought the sending off had a bearing on the result but for twenty minutes of the second half you wouldn’t have known which side had the ten men the way Alloa just rained the ball down on our box, playing of knock downs, but we stood up to that to our credit and got the break of a goal on the counter attack which was nice.

Stranraer v Alloa Athletic
allan maitland reflects on the stranraer game
It was an incredible first half because we played really well and dominated large spells of the game, they had a couple of flurry’s but by in large we dominated the first half, we had a great opportunity for Andy Scott to score when he was right through, but his sot skimmed by the post, Dougie Hill had two headers, one which Scott Black made a magnificent save at a corner kick and the other one he came in at the back post and the back hit him and somehow when over the bar, Jamie Stevenson cut inside and had a great shot, the goalkeeper saved it, so we had plenty great chances but never scored. Stranraer were awarded a penalty when Craig Frizzell and Dougie Hill went for a chase for the ball, Dougie lunged in to knock the ball out for a corner but took Frizzel first so it was a penalty kick.
We went in at half-time incredibly 1-0 down but not discouraged , I thought the players at half-time showed a real good spirit. Stranraer came out in the second half and played better and they had a spell in the second half when they were better than us and almost against the run of play we equalised. Steven McKeown had a shot which came back off the crossbar and Andy Scott scored and then the game changed again, goals invariably change games. We had chances just after drawing level then Dougie Hill scored his goal and at that stage it looked as through we could get another goal. Then again we didn’t do enough with the ball when we had it and same as last week against Stirling Albion we started getting sucked in and playing deeper and deeper. Then with only four minutes left Stranraer had a free kick which was played to the back post and we didn’t defend it properly, the keeper should have come for it, but didn’t, I said to the players after the game they had shown great spirit to get back into the game and we have also now ended the run of losing every game away from home this season in the league.
It’s a start, it’s a game I would like to have won but I think on this occasion it was important not to lose and I think we played well. As the game went on I thought about putting “Jinky” on but the conditions were not right for him to make his comeback, it was muddy, it was heavy and there were challenges flying in which I thought was not the right time for him to return to the game. It was unusual for me to keep with the eleven on the park but it was hard to change a team which was playing well, it was a worthy draw and I’m pleased at that, I’ve seen us play better and lose, football is stange. This Saturday we will have Andy Ferguson available, after he came through the bounce game on Tuesday night against Shotts Bon Accord, “Jinky” has also came through that game as well and did well, John Grant will be added to the squad again after serving his period of suspension, so we now have options on the bench and I’m very pleased with the progress of the youth teams at the club, Greig Spence has been in the first team squad and his time will come, given the right opportunity to be brought on the park, Allan McKenzie, Martin O’Neill, James Stevenson and Steven Barker all from the 19’s have impressed, while in the under 17’s Ross Philp and Joseph Feenan have impressed. Looking forward to Saturday against Queen’s Park, I’m really looking forward to the game and we need to win if we want to continue to make progress in the league.
