Hodge off as Alloa lose

After taking the lead as early as the 2nd minute when Ross Clark’s free kick was deflected past Mark McGeown by Dean Keenan, “The Wasps” did not capitalise on their chances in the first half when a second goal could have killed the game. The chances were there and a lack of confidence in front of goal, was to be punished. Ayr equalised right on half time, when their leading scorer Alex Williams headed home from a suspiciously looking offside position. Worse was to follow when Sandy Hodge was caught out by Gareth Wardlaw, and as he turned the two players went down, a free kick, but referee Anthony Law saw it as another booking and Sandy Hodge was dismissed. In the second half Ayr United dominated play with the extra player, but Alloa still came back and only an excellent save denied a Jamie Hay pile driver before Andy Scott could have sealed the points for “The Wasps”. Andy, only seconds on the park, was left clear at the back post, his initial shot was saved by Mark McGeown and the rebound put round the post by the keeper. With only ten minutes left Gareth Wardlaw scored the winning goal after Ayr looked to have run out of ideas, in time added on, a Ryan Stevenson free kick extending Ayr’s lead in a game which could have ended so differently.
