Paul Hartley continued his building of the squad for next season in the Second Division by adding twenty one year old left back Darryl Meggatt who joins the club from Queen's Park. Darryl started his footballing career with amateur side South Camlachie before joining "The Spiders" where his progress and displays have caught the eye, the manager is delighted to bring him to Recreation Park where we will look to him continuing his progress in the game and adding to our stength in the left side of defence.

Alloa Athletic FC

Alloa Chief hits Out At SFA Youth Scheme

Alloa chairman Mike Mulraney has hit out at the SFA after he was forced to make a structural change to the Third Division champion’s youth department to cater for their participation in the SFA’s Club Academy Scotland programme in what he called a “blind” fashion.

Mulraney reckons the game’s governing body are making a mistake in paying too little attention to the SFL clubs and their youth development work despite half of Craig Levein’s national side playing at that level earlier in their careers.

The Recreation Park side are looking to be involved at the top youth level from the start of next season, however Mulraney and other SFL chairmen have been left to prepare their clubs without any firm indication from the SFA what is going to be involved and what the cost is going to be.

Mulraney said: “We’re looking to have four teams playing at different age groups but no-one has told us what the changes to youth football in Scotland are going to be for next season. Incredibly we don’t know the budget either. I’m making changes to allow us to have a transition period from where we are now to what we need for next season and I’m doing it blind.

“The 30 SFL clubs are not being told what is required and it is almost like the SFA are not there to help us. This is a staggeringly bad way to run a major operation. We are two months away from the new programme and we do not know what we need to prepare for and what the impact on our cashflow will be.”

Alloa’s existing head of youth, former manager Hugh McCann, will leave the club at the end of June with a new combined youth and scouting role being undertaken by Graeme Liveston, who worked in Dundee United’s youth programme.

Alloa Athletic today announced the appointment of Graeme Liveston as Head of Youth Development and Scouting at Recreation Park. This is a huge coup for the club to attract such a well respected coach who has in the past been instrumental in bringing on top names at both Dundee United & Glasgow Rangers. This is part of a major restructure of the Youth set up at Recreation Park. The job will have a new profile with more hours, which will include working during week days and enhance and build a stronger working relationship with the community club. The club would like to thank Hugh McCann for his outstanding contribution to the club, as a player, manager and most recently as Head of Youth Development, a job he began at the start of Season 2001/02, in June, 2009 Hugh received the highest achievable award in the SFA Criteria in Youth Football when he received Youth Director Award, Hugh will shortly leave the club which will be our loss and somebody else’s gain.

Paul Hartley today continued to build for next season in the Second Division by bringing in his first new face for next season, David Cox who joins the club from Annan Athletic. The twenty three year old forward has always caught the eye when in oppostion to "The Wasps" scoring nine goals last season for the Galabank club. David started his career as a youth at Kilmarnock before a short spell on loan with Montrose. The manager is delighted to bring the player to the club, who will give us a different type of threat up front, he will join the players at the start of pre season training. The manager also signed goalkeeper Craig McDowall on a new one year deal and young goakeeper, 17 year old Mikey Couser who has been signed with a view to the future, such is his promise. This is only the start with the manager realising he will need to look to strenghen his squad further for next season and is looking to add another couple of forwards whom he is targeting.

STOP PRESS - Stevie May this evening won the PFA Third Division Player of the Year, which is further recognition at just what a successful period the player has had since moving to Alloa athletic in December, 2011 on loan from SPL side St. Johnstone. In Stevie's short time with the club he has played 22 first team games and scored 19 goals which has been instrumental in helping "The Wasps" secure the third Division title. Stevie was also last week named in the Scotland under 20 side who will travel to Holland at the end of this month to play in the ADO Den Haag Tournament.

Alloa Athletic ended a fantastic season with a hard fought draw against Annan Athletic, who threatened to spoil the party ocassion. A crowd of 2,551 fans were inside Recreation Park to witness "The Wasps" collect the Third Division Championship trophy for only the second time in their history. Annan Athletic afforded Paul Hartley's team a guard of honour at the start of the match, but their goodwill ended there, as often happens on these ocassions it was not the champions who looked at their best and Graeme Bell, deservedly put the visitors ahead just aftet the half hour. The Alloa Athletic players have done brilliantly all season but in the first half they didn't play well and had Scott Bain to thank for keeping them in the match. In the second half Alloa dominated possesion but it didn't look as though it was going to be Alloa's day, until three minutes from the end Stevie Masterton struck the post with a vicious free kick and Steve May was on hand to score his 19th goal of the season to cheer up the large home support. Indeed two minutes later Stevie Masterton nearly found a winner but his free kick on this occasion just flew inches over the bar.
