    Young Wasps Outstanding

    Tuesday, August 27, 2013 7:27:28 PM
A very young Alloa Athletic side took on East Stirlingshire on Tuesday night at Recreation Park, on the same night as the first team were playing Aberdeen at Pittodrie in the Scottish Communities League Cup. On looking at the initial team lines few could be excused for thinking Alloa were in with little of a chance as their young side took on a first team East Stirlingshire side who are currently unbeaten and sitting top of the SPFL Division Two. However Graeme Liveston's put on a display that had everybody in the ground taking about the football the young Wasps displayed. The young team built in confidence after showing they could stand up to there older and taller opponents, they took the lead through Nathan Moore and ten minutes later Ryan Gemmell waltzed through the Shire defence to make it two. Five minutes later the tie might have been all over but Aaron Stubberfield shot straight at their keeper and four minutes from half time Shire's Paul Quinn punished a mistake in defence to give them a foothold. In the second period both teams had chances before substitute Jack Campbell drew the sides level, with time running out ex Wasp Max Wright missed an open goal but Alloa still were creating chances themselves. Game ended 2-2, straight to penalties where East Stirling won 4-2 with Chad Meechan and Ross Kavanagh failing from the spot. At the end of the game Shire moved forward to next round to face Stirling Albion but the young Alloa side were the stars on the evening.
