    An Appreciation

When I was approached by George in September 1985 and invited to take on his role as Club Secretary I was conscious that I would be stepping into the shoes of a man who had served in that role for over 30 years.  He was a former Club Chairman and held the role of Treasurer, a position in which he continued until approximately a month ago.  He had also served on the SFA Council from 1980 – 1982.

In my early years in post I had the benefit of drawing on George’s vast experience.  As the years wore on he gradually slackened the reins and gave me a free hand while always maintaining an interest in my discharge of my responsibilities.

It is no exaggeration to say that, family apart, George’s life revolved around the Club.  He was a daily visitor to “the Recs” – it was never the Indodrill to George – attending to the day to day financial aspects of running the Club.  Under his stewardship over 60 years the Club was always on a stable financial footing.  Even after George stepped down from the Board 5 years ago he maintained his daily visits.

At the time of his standing down and in recognition of his service and his many years of wise counsel at Board meetings he was accorded the status of Honorary Club President, a title never before bestowed.  He accepted the award in his typical unassuming manner.

With George’s passing the Club has lost a wonderful servant.  It has been a privilege for all of us at the Club to have known him and shared his love of Alloa Athletic F.C.
