Manager looks ahead to League start

    Thursday, August 23, 2012 5:04:44 PM

Today I would like to extend a warm welcome to the presentation party who will present the club with the Scottish Football League Third Division League Championship flag, another reminder to how well the team performed and achieved last season - which I am proud of. It is good for the club due to the hard work we put in last season and it will be a nice occasion for the supporters, the Chairman, directors and myself. However we do need to start again and it will be a much tougher season ahead for us in a higher division, it will be a tough test but I want to continue the momentum and look forward to having another successful season and continue the progression at the club.
However last season is now in the past and we will need to focus on this season, we do not want to look back, we know it will be tougher this season, a lot of the teams will have bigger budgets than ourselves, but that doesn’t mean anything, I feel that we have a squad of players that are capable of winning games, we have kept the majority of the players and added four or five new faces to freshen the squad up. Pre season has gone well and we played the type of opposition who gave us a challenge. In our opening competitive game against Cowdenbeath in the Ramsden’s Cup I felt we were a bit unfortunate to get beat on penalties - on the day, the performance and display was more important. We will not get away with certain things in the higher division as we might have done last season in the Third Division, we are prepared, we are a year older as a team as is myself as manager and my coaching staff.
Today I would also like to welcome Gordon Durie, Billy Dodds and Gordon Chisholm, the players, coaches, supporters and directors of East Fife FC as they visit Recreation Park on the opening league game of the season, the first game of the season you never know what it can bring, but last season our home form was a big factor in us winning the league and hopefully we will look to continuing that on but we know it will be a tough game against East Fife, they have good players, they are a very experienced back room team at Methil, but we will go and have a go. Today we will miss the services of defender Ben Gordon who scored our opening goal of the season at Cowdenbeath as he carries over a one game suspension from last season, however it is hoped both Stephen Simmons and Daryll Meggatt will be back in the squad for our opening league fixture. We are still looking to strengthen the squad but we have to be patient on that front, I want to get the right person in and will not rush into signing a player to make up the numbers, I have every faith in the players we have, we have good quality and if we start the season with our current pool of players I will be happy.
It’s our first league game in the Second Division we want to get off to a good start but we know it is going to be tough throughout the season but one thing I can say to the fans is that we will have a go that’s for sure. Let’s enjoy today and hopefully it will be another day to remember for the club for the right reasons.
