Paul Hartley after Airdrie Utd friendly

I was pleased, the first half was good, we changed it a little bit in the second half making four or five changes but that is to be expected in these pre season matches. The attitude of the players has been first class and we scored a great goal so that was pleasing. So far I’ve looked at more than 30 players – one or two have impressed me as we try and get a squad together but we are now just about there, maybe another two players to come in. Tonight Stirling Smith did well at left back, I know him from my time at Aberdeen, he scored a great goal but not just that his overall play and defending was solid, our back four tonight was different again from Saturday but unfortunately we didn’t keep a clean sheet losing a sloppy goal with a short pass back. Stirling has good experience with playing at Aberdeen and his spells on loan to Dumbarton & Peterhead, he is a solid defender, very quick but I certainly would like to keep him in my sights. Its been hectic, it is a brand new team will are having to build, we will be the only team in the league who will need to that but we are getting there, I’m certainly pleased with the squad of players we are starting to build at the club – a lot of good quality players, who can play football, and that will be our aim to try and be a passing team. We are delighted to have been able to attract both the McCord brothers to this club, there was other clubs trying to get them but we persuaded them to come here and they have been given a platform and its now up to them but you can see the quality they have when they are on the ball and they have a great understanding of each other. So tonight was another important step before the season starts but over the next couple of closed door friendlies against Queen of the South and Dumbarton I will again be casting my eye over more “trialist” players but every manager has to work within a budget and that will be the case for me as well.
