    Barry Smith v. East Stirling

    Sunday, July 06, 2014 2:17:38 AM

Today we tried to give everybody 45 minutes for fitness reasons, it is always pleasing when you win but it is more about the fitness at this stage getting the team in shape and match fit, the players did come back in good condition but that is different from match fitness. All the players who come here and we play as “trialists” need to be worthy of a contract and I will decide over the next couple of weeks but the boys who played today did themselves no harm, we were looking at the game today more in terms of fitness and they all looked as if they were fit in terms of getting up and down the park it’s just the sharpness we are now looking and that will come with more games. Its pre season we don’t read too much into results, its pleasing to get the win but it is more about getting them match fit for the first game of the season. We will have other players in , we are still talking to people just now about coming, but it’s not as easy as just asking people to come along – everybody wants full time football which I appreciate, but somewhere along the line there has to be some realism, Alloa is a good club to come to and I’m sure people soon realise that in a short time once they are here but it’s getting them here. We will now focus on Tuesday night when we have Montrose visiting Recreation Park, so that will be another opportunity for me to give some of the players more time on the park. Next Saturday we play in the Oban Tournament, I have never been to it before, I know the club has been quite a few times in the past, I think it is good for the players because they get plenty games and everybody gets a chance to play and I can try different formations and see what works, so it is a good tournament to have in the middle of pre season and get of ready for our last two games of our pre season. Our first competitive opponents in the Petrofac Training Cup are now known to be Arbroath but any cup game is now played as a cup final so we will just go up and enjoy the game and sure new manager Allan Moore will has instilled in them the way he wants them to play and we will look to play as we can when we go up there, the pitch will be in good condition if the winds not there it will be ideal for a game but we cannot predict the conditions but nevertheless we will go and give it our best shot.
